THE GOLDEN AGE OF BALLET IN RUSSIA The Imperial Theaters under the last three Tzars
|
May 26, 2012
|

Two informative lectures were presented at the Dokoudovsky New York Conservatory of Dance, by members of the Russian Nobility Association, Ludmila Polchaninova Selinsky and Svetlana Caton-Noble. Ludmila Selinsky opened with Roehrich's painting for one of Diaghilev's ballets "The Rite of Spring". The image testifies the high place that dance has been occupying in the Russian culture from the earliest of times. She continued with a description of the social, economic and political backdrop in Russia stressing the period that preceeded the break of the Revolution.
Svetlana Caton-Noble introduced the history of ballet from the XVII century on. She showed seventeen images and gave biographical notes of artists and intellectuals whose talent and work shaped the Art World in Russia, particularly the art of ballet in the world today. Coincidently, like Ludmila Selinsky, Svetlana Caton-Noble chose to conclude with also an image of Roehrich's work; The Madonna holding the Banner of Peace: "Where there is Culture, there is Peace, where there is Peace, there is Culture."
The Ballet Performance featured two guest artists, Oksana Maslova and Anton Kandaurov in Sleeping Beauty Pas de Deux. Aina Tadokoro, Tatiana Ferraro, Gabriella Albanese and Briana Gobourne performed sections of the ballet Paquita (Choreography of Petipa). Aina Tadokoro closed the performance with a variation from La Esmeralda.
Special thanks to Patricia Dokoudovsky for hosting this event. Many thanks to Peter Ward of Lindenhurst Library for supplying us with an overhead projector.
